Microsoft is extending its Sovereign Cloud capabilities, introducing support for large AI models that can operate securely even when completely disconnected from the internet. This move addresses growing demand from governments and highly regulated industries for digital sovereignty, ensuring critical data and operations remain within strict national or organizational boundaries.

The update, detailed by The Official Microsoft Blog, focuses on a trifecta of localized services. Azure Local now allows mission-critical infrastructure to run with consistent Azure governance and policy controls in fully isolated environments. This ensures operational continuity without reliance on public cloud connectivity.

Alongside infrastructure, Microsoft 365 Local brings core productivity workloads like Exchange, SharePoint, and Skype for Business Server directly into the customer's sovereign operational boundary. Teams can collaborate and share information securely, maintaining full functionality offline.

Crucially, Foundry Local adds modern infrastructure and support for large AI models. Organizations can now deploy advanced multimodal models locally on their own hardware, leveraging partners like NVIDIA for GPUs. This enables powerful, local AI inferencing in environments that demand absolute disconnection and data control.

These offerings—Azure Local, Microsoft 365 Local, and Foundry Local—unify under the Sovereign Private Cloud umbrella. This provides a full-stack, localized experience designed for resilience across any connectivity condition, allowing customers to maintain uninterrupted operations, protect critical workloads, and enforce consistent governance while keeping data, identities, and operations strictly within their sovereign boundaries.
