Microsoft has issued a statement clarifying that its foundational partnership with OpenAI remains "strong and central" despite OpenAI's new collaborations, specifically mentioning an OpenAI Amazon partnership. The tech giant emphasized that these new alliances do not alter the existing terms of its deep integration with the AI developer, which began in 2019.

The announcement addresses growing speculation around OpenAI's expanding network of partners and funding, reaffirming that Microsoft's exclusive license and access to OpenAI's intellectual property remain unchanged. This includes the revenue share arrangement, which has always encompassed earnings from OpenAI’s collaborations with other cloud providers. This clarification reinforces the stability of the Microsoft OpenAI partnership amidst evolving industry dynamics.

Azure's Enduring Role

Crucially, Microsoft reiterated that Azure continues as the exclusive cloud provider for stateless OpenAI APIs. This means any stateless API calls to OpenAI models, even those resulting from a collaboration like the OpenAI Amazon partnership, will be hosted on Azure. OpenAI’s first-party products, including Frontier, will also remain on Azure, leveraging its global infrastructure and enterprise-grade security.

The company also noted that the contractual definition of AGI and the process for its determination are unchanged. While OpenAI retains flexibility to commit to additional compute elsewhere for large-scale infrastructure initiatives such as the Stargate project, the partnership structure was designed to allow both Microsoft and OpenAI to pursue independent opportunities while maintaining their core collaboration.

This statement aims to quell any doubts about the long-term commitment and strategic alignment between Microsoft and OpenAI, asserting that their shared mission to advance responsible AI development persists.
